Emirates Airlines Wheelchair Assistance

As one of the top airlines in the world, Emirates Airlines did not secure this spot by being selective of their passengers and giving only the best customer service to VIPs or first-class passengers. Known for being inclusive, Emirates Airlines provides one of the most exceptional services to its disabled passengers.

In this latest blog post from Gilani Mobility, we’ll list all relevant information that wheelchair users need to know before booking a flight with Emirates Airlines.

What are the difficulties faced by wheelchair users when travelling?

Wheelchair users face several difficulties when travelling, starting with the accessibility of the airport, how extensive the assistance provided by the airline is, and how supportive the airport and airline staff are. Fortunately, most international airports and travel hubs are improving their amenities and facilities to be more accessible.

Emirates Airlines’ “Accessible Travel”

For those disabled passengers thinking of flying Emirates, the airline has a dedicated web page enumerating all the services they offer for accessible travel. The Dubai based airline also lists the necessary information that passengers who need mobility assistance must know before and during the flight.

Upon booking

Emirates Airlines can arrange for wheelchair users to have a wheelchair ready at every airport (departure and arrival), especially those who are transiting or changing airports. Wheelchair users can also bring their manual or electric wheelchair or other mobility products on their flights. Passengers with mobility issues are requested to inform the airline upon booking or 48 hours before their flight.

At the airport

Emirates Airline airport staff are available to assist wheelchair passengers upon arrival at the airport to check-in, boarding and upon arrival at the destination airport.

Travelling with your own wheelchair

Aside from a portable manual wheelchair, disabled passengers can also bring their medical equipment and another mobility aid inside the aircraft, provided the mobility products fit the specifications and can be stowed securely inside the plane. If the wheelchair is big, it can be checked in and wouldn’t be counted towards the passenger’s baggage allowance.

Electric mobility aids

Passengers who use electric mobility aids are requested to coordinate with Emirates Airlines since there are several safety procedures that the airline needs to follow with regards to travelling with batteries. If you’re travelling with an electric mobility aid, the airline recommends arriving at the airport three hours before the flight to accommodate all the necessary procedures in ensuring your mobility aids are within the regulations.

Boarding

Passengers with disabilities are among the passengers with priority boarding. Avail this service to give yourself more time to settle in your seat before the flight and to give the airline staff ample time to stow or board your mobility products.

During the flight

If your own wheelchair is not cabin-approved, Emirates Airlines has cabin wheelchairs that you can use. If you need to move around the aircraft, the cabin crew can help you and assist you and if you need anything from the overhead luggage bin.

However, cabin crews will not be able to lift passengers with mobility limitations and assist them with personal care such as using the lavatories, eating or administering medicines. If you’re not able to do these things by yourself, you will need to travel with a caregiver.

Accessible seats

Wheelchair users are usually given aisle seats for easier transfer from the seat to the wheelchair, especially if the passenger needs to frequently use the lavatories. Wheelchair users as well as other individuals with disabilities are not allowed to sit in the exit rows.
