Why the Hyundai Staria G24 NoRamp® Makes Accessible Parking Easier for Wheelchair Users

G24 Vehicle Modification no ramp

Hyundai Staria G24 NoRamp® Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

Finding a suitable accessible parking space can be difficult, particularly when a conventional wheelchair accessible vehicle requires a long ramp or platform to extend behind the vehicle.

The Hyundai Staria G24 NoRamp® wheelchair accessible conversion offers a more practical approach. Instead of relying on a large external rear ramp, the vehicle’s integrated lowered-floor access system brings the entry area down towards ground level, helping the wheelchair user enter and exit without deploying a long ramp behind the vehicle.

Developed by Ray Gilani and the Gilani Engineering team, the G24 NoRamp® system is designed for families, wheelchair users, carers and accessible transport providers looking for a modern Hyundai Staria conversion with convenient everyday access.

Important parking clarification

The G24 NoRamp® may reduce the need to rely on an accessible parking bay solely for ramp deployment. However, the conversion does not provide an exemption from New Zealand parking laws, mobility parking permit requirements, signs or parking time limits.

Why Traditional Wheelchair Ramps Can Limit Where You Park

Traditional rear-entry wheelchair vehicles usually need additional clear space behind the vehicle before the ramp can be opened safely. This can become difficult when:

  • another vehicle parks closely behind you;
  • the car park has a wall, kerb or trolley bay behind the vehicle;
  • you are parked in a short residential driveway;
  • you need to load near a school, medical centre or busy shopping area;
  • the available parking space does not provide enough ramp clearance.

A conventional ramp may also create a steep approach where the road or parking surface is uneven. The G24 NoRamp® was developed to address these everyday access challenges.

How the Hyundai Staria G24 NoRamp® System Works

The G24 NoRamp® conversion integrates the wheelchair access system into the Hyundai Staria rather than storing a large folding ramp vertically inside the rear doorway.

At the press of a control, the access section lowers to create a direct entry path for the wheelchair user. Once the wheelchair is positioned inside the vehicle, the system returns to its travelling position and the wheelchair can be secured using an appropriate restraint and occupant seatbelt system.

This approach creates a cleaner rear-entry arrangement and may require less loading clearance than a traditional long-ramp conversion.

Benefits of the Hyundai Staria NoRamp® Conversion

No Long External Ramp

The wheelchair access system does not depend on a long folding ramp extending behind the Hyundai Staria.

Less Rear Clearance Required

The system can make access more practical where there is limited space behind the vehicle.

Clearer Rear Visibility

There is no large upright ramp permanently obstructing the rear window when the vehicle is being driven.

Reduced Manual Handling

The powered access process avoids the need for a carer to manually unfold and lift a heavy ramp during each journey.

Modern Vehicle Platform

The Hyundai Staria provides a spacious cabin, wide rear opening and contemporary passenger-vehicle design.

Custom Configuration

The wheelchair position, seating arrangement, restraint system and access controls can be assessed around the user’s needs.

Designed Around the Hyundai Staria

The Hyundai Staria is well suited to wheelchair accessible vehicle conversions because of its large passenger area, wide rear opening and spacious interior.

However, every wheelchair user has different requirements. The correct conversion should consider:

  • the wheelchair’s total length, width and occupied height;
  • the combined weight of the wheelchair and occupant;
  • the required wheelchair travelling position;
  • the number of passenger seats required;
  • head clearance and interior manoeuvring space;
  • the preferred restraint or docking system;
  • the needs of carers and other passengers;
  • whether additional transfer or driving equipment is required.

A suitability assessment should therefore be completed before confirming the final Hyundai Staria conversion layout.

Wheelchair Restraints and Occupant Safety

Safe wheelchair transport involves more than providing an entry system. Once inside the Hyundai Staria, the wheelchair and its occupant must be secured using equipment appropriate for the vehicle, wheelchair and intended use.

Gilani Mobility supplies wheelchair restraint and occupant seatbelt systems for accessible vehicles.

You can also view our wheelchair tie-down restraint system for more information about vehicle wheelchair securement.

Additional Hyundai Staria Accessibility Options

Depending on the wheelchair user’s needs, the Hyundai Staria can also be considered alongside other vehicle access and transfer solutions.

Developed and Reviewed by Ray Gilani

Ray Gilani — Chief Engineer and G24 NoRamp® Inventor

The G24 NoRamp® concept was developed by Ray Gilani, Chief Engineer at Gilani Engineering, after identifying the practical limitations of conventional rear-ramp wheelchair vehicles.

Ray specialises in assistive technology, accessible vehicle engineering, automotive modifications and wheelchair transport systems. His work includes lowered-floor vehicle conversions, wheelchair access systems, driving adaptations, occupant restraints and custom mobility engineering.

Rather than accepting the traditional folding ramp as the only way to enter a wheelchair accessible vehicle, Ray and the Gilani Engineering team developed the G24 system to provide a more integrated ground-level access solution.

Can You Use the G24 in a Standard Parking Space?

In many circumstances, the Hyundai Staria G24 NoRamp® can be easier to use in a standard parking space than a vehicle with a long rear ramp because less clear space may be needed behind the vehicle.

However, the driver must still ensure there is enough safe space for the wheelchair user to enter or exit. The loading area should be clear of passing traffic, steep surfaces, kerbs and other hazards.

Where available, an authorised mobility parking space may still provide the safest and most convenient access because it generally offers additional room around the vehicle and closer access to the destination.

Who May Benefit from a Hyundai Staria NoRamp® Conversion?

The conversion may suit:

  • wheelchair users who prefer to remain seated in their wheelchair while travelling;
  • families transporting a child or adult wheelchair user;
  • people using powered, manual or specialised wheelchairs;
  • carers who want to reduce repeated manual ramp handling;
  • disability and community transport organisations;
  • aged-care and healthcare transport providers;
  • users who regularly encounter limited rear loading space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Hyundai Staria G24 have a wheelchair ramp?

No long external wheelchair ramp is required. The G24 system uses an integrated lowered access section to create a direct entry path into the Hyundai Staria.

Does the G24 mean I can park anywhere?

No. All local parking rules, signs, time restrictions and mobility parking permit conditions still apply. The benefit is that the vehicle may require less space behind it for wheelchair entry than a conventional long-ramp vehicle.

Do I still need a mobility parking permit?

A valid permit is still required whenever you use a space reserved for mobility parking permit holders. The G24 conversion does not provide parking privileges or exemptions.

Can different wheelchairs fit inside the Hyundai Staria?

Many manual and powered wheelchairs may be suitable, but the wheelchair’s dimensions, occupied height, weight and securement points must be checked before confirming the conversion.

Can the seating arrangement be customised?

Possible seating configurations depend on the Hyundai Staria model, the wheelchair position, passenger requirements and the final engineering design. A suitability assessment is required before the layout is confirmed.

Can wheelchair restraints be included?

Yes. Appropriate wheelchair tie-downs, docking options and occupant seatbelt systems can be considered as part of the overall vehicle configuration.

Is the G24 suitable for an electric wheelchair?

It may be suitable for many electric wheelchairs, subject to the wheelchair’s total dimensions, combined occupied weight, ground clearance and approved transport configuration.

Discuss a Hyundai Staria G24 NoRamp® Conversion

Choosing a wheelchair accessible vehicle is a major decision. The vehicle, wheelchair, passenger layout and access system should be considered together rather than selecting a conversion based on vehicle model alone.
