Walking Frames NZ — Zimmer Frames & Standing Support Frames

A walking frame is a rigid, four-legged support frame that gives maximum stability for people who need firm, weight-bearing help to stay steady on their feet. Often called a Zimmer frame, it’s the most supportive walking aid — ideal for indoor use, shorter distances and anyone who needs solid support rather than the wheeled movement of a rollator. Our range of walking frames in New Zealand ships NZ-wide with free delivery and a 12-month warranty.

Types of Walking Frame

  • Standard walking frame (Zimmer frame) — a rigid, non-wheeled frame that you lift slightly to move forward. Gives the most stability and weight support, best for indoor use.
  • Two-wheel walking frame — front wheels with rear glides, so it slides forward without lifting while still offering firm support. A good middle ground for those who find lifting a frame tiring.
  • Forearm / gutter frame — with padded arm supports for people who need to take weight through the forearms rather than the hands.

Every frame is height-adjustable so it can be set to the right fit for the user.

Walking Frame or Rollator?

Choose a walking frame if you need maximum stability and firm, weight-bearing support, mainly indoors and over shorter distances. If you can walk more independently and want wheels, a seat to rest on and easier movement outdoors, a rollator is likely the better choice. See our full walking aids range to compare all the options.

What to Look For

  • Height adjustment — handles should sit at wrist height, with elbows slightly bent when holding them
  • Wheeled or non-wheeled — non-wheeled for maximum stability; two front wheels for easier forward movement
  • Grip and weight — comfortable hand grips and a lightweight aluminium frame that’s easy to lift
  • Weight capacity — standard frames suit up to around 100–135kg; heavier-duty options are available for larger users
  • Folding — most frames fold flat for easy transport and storage

Who Walking Frames Suit

Walking frames are ideal for older people and those with reduced balance or strength who need firm support to move safely, particularly indoors. They’re commonly used at home, in aged care and during recovery or rehabilitation, and they help reduce the risk of falls by providing a stable, supportive base.

Funding for Walking Frames in New Zealand

Walking frames may be funded for eligible users through ACC (for injury-related needs) or Ministry of Health equipment funding via Enable New Zealand or Accessable, usually after an assessment. We can provide a quote or invoice to submit to your funder. Please note Gilani Mobility is not a registered supplier under these schemes, so approval and eligibility are decided by your funder.
