Sit-to-Stand Aid — Manual Stand Assist & Patient Transfer Aid NZ

The Sit Up Aid Sit-to-Stand Manual Lift is a sit-to-stand aid that helps a partially weight-bearing person pull themselves up into a standing position, then be moved safely between the bed, chair, toilet and wheelchair. It is a manual, carer-assisted stand aid — no motor or power required — that significantly reduces the manual handling load on caregivers while keeping the user actively involved in the transfer, which supports their strength, confidence and dignity.

Often searched as a sit-to-stand lift, stand assist lift, stand-up lift, standing aid, standing transfer aid or patient transfer aid, it is widely used in home care, aged care, rehabilitation and disability support for safe, repeatable transfers.

Is a Sit-to-Stand Aid Right for the User?

A sit-to-stand aid is designed for people who still have some ability to bear weight on their legs and can hold the support bar to take part in the transfer — typically someone who can support a good portion of their own weight but needs help rising and steadying. If the user cannot bear any weight or cannot hold the bar, a full-body hoist is the safer choice. If you are unsure which suits your situation, see our portable patient hoist, read our guide to the different types of hoists used in healthcare, or contact our team for guidance.

Sit-to-Stand Aid vs Standing Hoist vs Full-Body Hoist

  • Manual sit-to-stand aid (this product): the user pulls themselves up on the crossbar while their knees are supported, and the carer wheels them to the next seat. No power or sling. Suits users who can bear some weight and hold the bar.
  • Standing hoist (powered stand-up hoist): a motor and a support sling raise the user into standing. Suits users who can bear some weight but don’t have the upper-body strength to pull themselves up.
  • Full-body hoist: lifts the user entirely in a sling. For users who cannot bear weight at all — see our patient hoist and hoist and sling lifters.

If the user can’t take any steps but can sit upright, a seated transfer chair is another option, such as the hydraulic commode transfer chair.

How It Works

The user holds the crossbar handle and pulls themselves up into standing, supported by soft knee pads that stabilise the legs during the lift and while standing. Because the movement is a pulling motion rather than a push, it engages the user actively and supports their dignity during the transfer. The carer then uses the integrated seat handgrips to turn and move the unit, and the pivoting seat swings out to make getting on and off easy. Total-lock castors hold the unit completely steady when anchored.

For extra security during the stand, many carers pair a stand aid with a patient transfer belt. For step-by-step technique, see our guide on how to safely transfer a patient from wheelchair to bed.

Who It Suits

This stand aid suits people who are partially weight-bearing and can steady themselves by holding the support bar, but need help rising and transferring. It is a practical transfer aid for home care, aged care facilities, rehabilitation and disability support, and is especially useful for getting on and off the toilet, in and out of a chair or sofa, and to and from the bed. The user must be able to hold the support bar and bear some weight to use it safely.

Space Needed at Home

The unit measures 92 x 62 x 105 cm, and the pivot legs open from 61 cm to 84 cm to fit around chairs, beds and toilets. Check doorway widths and the clear floor space beside the toilet or bed before ordering. For bathroom layout guidance, see our guide to disabled toilet dimensions in NZ. At the bedside, a height-adjustable bed such as our electric hospital bed makes the sit-to-stand start easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sit-to-stand aid?

It is a transfer aid that helps a partially weight-bearing person rise from sitting to standing and move safely between the bed, chair, toilet and wheelchair. This is a manual model — the user pulls themselves up on the crossbar handle while a carer assists, with no motor required. It is also known as a sit-to-stand lift, stand assist lift or standing transfer aid.

What is the difference between a sit-to-stand aid and a standing hoist?

A manual sit-to-stand aid relies on the user pulling themselves up on the crossbar. A standing hoist uses a motor and sling to raise the user, so it suits people who can bear some weight but lack the arm strength to pull up. Neither is suitable for someone who cannot bear weight at all — they need a full-body hoist.

What is the difference between a sit-to-stand aid and a patient hoist?

A sit-to-stand aid is for users who can bear some of their own weight and hold the support bar to take part in the transfer. A full-body patient hoist is for users who cannot bear weight at all and need to be lifted entirely. If the user can’t support themselves or hold the bar, a hoist is the safer option.

Is it manual or powered?

It is manual and carer-assisted, with no power or charging needed. The user pulls up on the crossbar while soft knee supports stabilise them, and the carer steers using the seat handgrips.

What weight can it support?

It has a loading capacity of 150 kg. If you need a higher capacity, contact our team and we can advise on alternatives.

Can it be used for toilet transfers?

Yes. The pivoting seat and pulling motion make it well suited to getting on and off the toilet, as well as transfers to and from chairs, sofas and beds.

How much space does it need?

The unit is 62 cm wide, and the pivot legs open from 61 cm to 84 cm. Measure your doorways and the floor space beside the toilet, chair or bed before ordering, and contact us if you’re unsure.

Can a transfer aid be funded in New Zealand?

Some equipment may be funded for eligible users through ACC or government disability equipment funding administered by Enable New Zealand or Accessable. We can provide a quote or invoice to submit to your funder. Please note Gilani Mobility is not a registered supplier under these schemes, so approval and eligibility are decided by your funder.

Does it come with a warranty and NZ delivery?

Yes. It ships New Zealand-wide with free delivery and a 12-month manufacturer warranty. Support is provided remotely by phone and email.

Funding in New Zealand

Patient transfer and lifting equipment may be funded for some users through ACC or government disability equipment funding (administered by Enable New Zealand or Accessable), depending on eligibility and assessment. Please note we are not a registered supplier with these bodies — approval, eligibility and payment are determined by your funder, not by us. Contact our team for a quote you can put forward for funding.
