Description

Reclining Tilt-in-Space Paediatric Wheelchair — With Headrest & Leg Rests

This reclining paediatric wheelchair is designed to give children with additional needs comfortable, supportive seating that adjusts to them through the day. With a reclining, tilting backrest, a supportive headrest, and adjustable leg and arm rests, it helps a child sit, rest and reposition in comfort — while the larger rear wheels allow the chair to be self-propelled or pushed by a carer.

Often searched as a reclining child wheelchair, paediatric wheelchair, tilt-in-space wheelchair or special needs wheelchair, it’s built around comfort, posture and practical everyday use.

Comfort and Support That Adjusts to Your Child

Children who need extra support benefit from seating that can change position rather than staying fixed. This chair reclines and tilts up to 45°, so your child can sit upright for activities or recline back to rest without needing to transfer out of the chair. The supportive headrest, padded backrest and cushioned seat hold the upper body gently and comfortably, and the adjustable supports give a secure, customised fit.

Why Parents and Carers Choose This Wheelchair

  • Reclining, tilting backrest (up to 45°) — sit upright or recline to rest, no transferring needed
  • Supportive headrest — comfortable head and neck support
  • Detachable, height-adjustable footrest — customised leg support and easy transfers
  • Removable armrests — for easy side transfers in and out of the chair
  • Self-propel or carer-push — larger rear wheels for independence or assistance
  • Aluminium parking brakes — secure and simple to use
  • Folds compactly — for the car and storage
  • Free NZ-wide delivery with a 12-month manufacturer warranty

Who It’s For

This reclining paediatric wheelchair suits children with additional mobility or postural needs who benefit from supportive, adjustable seating — including children who need to change position and rest through the day. It’s commonly used for children with conditions such as cerebral palsy and other developmental or physical needs where posture and comfort matter. Because every child’s needs are different, we recommend your child’s occupational therapist or physiotherapist helps confirm the right chair and supports, and our team is happy to help.

Reclining Wheelchair or Stroller?

This chair has larger rear wheels, so it can be self-propelled by the child or pushed by a carer. If you’d prefer a lighter, carer-pushed pushchair style for outings and travel, see our child wheelchair stroller. For a lighter self-propel chair, see the ultralight paediatric wheelchair.

Why Tilt-in-Space Matters

Most of us shift our weight constantly without thinking about it, to stay comfortable and avoid pressure building up. Children with conditions such as cerebral palsy may not be able to reposition themselves, which puts them at higher risk of pressure injuries, discomfort and postural problems. Tilt-in-space seating helps by tilting the whole seat backwards in one smooth motion — keeping the body properly aligned while redistributing pressure.

Because the seat pivots as a single unit, the child’s hips and knees stay in a fixed, supported position as they tilt — which can be gentler for children whose muscle tone is affected by moving the legs. And unlike a simple recline that leaves a child looking at the ceiling, tilting keeps them more upright and able to see and engage with what’s around them. Combined with the reclining backrest, supportive headrest and adjustable leg rests, it gives real flexibility for comfort, rest and posture through the day.

Tilt-in-space isn’t suitable for every child — for example where there are swallowing difficulties or specific clinical needs. We recommend an assessment with your child’s occupational therapist or physiotherapist to confirm the right seating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the reclining function do?

The backrest reclines and tilts up to 45°, so your child can sit upright for activities or recline to rest and be repositioned through the day — without needing to transfer out of the chair.

Can the child self-propel, or is it carer-pushed?

Both. The larger rear wheels allow the chair to be self-propelled by the child where they’re able, or pushed by a carer. If you’d prefer a lighter carer-pushed style, see our child wheelchair stroller.

Is it suitable for a child with cerebral palsy?

It’s commonly used for children with cerebral palsy and other conditions where posture and support matter, thanks to its reclining, tilting seat, headrest and adjustable supports. We recommend your child’s OT or physiotherapist helps confirm the right fit.

What weight does it support?

The chair has a maximum load capacity of 100kg.

Does it fold for transport?

Yes. It folds to a compact size (around 31cm folded) for the car and storage, though at 21.4kg it’s a full-featured supportive chair rather than an ultra-light travel model.

Can it be funded in New Zealand?

Paediatric mobility equipment may be funded for eligible children through Ministry of Health equipment funding via Enable New Zealand or Accessable, or through ACC for injury-related needs, usually after an assessment. We can provide a quote and specifications to submit to your funder, though we are not a registered supplier and approval is decided by the funder.

Does it come with a warranty and NZ delivery?

Yes. It ships New Zealand-wide with free delivery and a 12-month manufacturer warranty, with remote phone and email support.
